iDAT 302 2008-2009
Assignment: Application of Media in creative context [50% o the overall module mark)
Specification: This is an individual and non-implementation project articulated through paper based design proposal. The main objective is to explore the design process considering all the stages of development other than technical implementation in response to the brief below. It will help you to use and include the following elements/methods in your submission – you may of course add any other element/method that you have used to establish your design. URL’s are provided as a starting point.
Brief: ARTE 2.0 VOCENTO: the art of exhibiting art online
The assignment requires you to produce a proposal for innovative and experimental online platform or effective web tool to foster and stimulate the presence, exhibition, communication and management of art on the Internet. The proposal is to provide art galleries with web solutions responding to the concept of Web 2.0, and to provide opportunities to enhance their online presence and networking potential.
The assignments aims to encourage research and innovation in the field of social technologies and artistic practice, and more specifically to identify current needs and provide suitable solutions for art galleries in the context of the Internet. The proposal, a complete web concept, or environment, or tool, will be a hypothetical application to be implemented by art galleries.
Elements to be included in the proposal
Mind maps - brainstorm the possibilities, identify related works/interfaces/approaches

Flow Diagrams - use a flow diagram to explore interaction between elements, navigation of content, use of features, interaction and feedback.
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=flow+diagram&btnG=Search+ImagesResearch – investigate and critique related examples (encountered in the lecture program for instance)
Design / Mood board – how would the interface look and feel, how does interaction work, what methods do you use, we looked at a range of examples with specific audiences/applications in mind! Consider; how does the user participate and navigate, what feedback/help/guidance methods would work best for your target audience…

http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=mood+board+interface&btnG=Search+ImagesStoryboard – outline the stages of project, what does the user see/hear/do
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=storyboard&btnG=Search+ImagesEvaluation – provide an objective write up of your design process, how your approach is effective, potential improvements/alternative solutions. Also consider the level to which you investigated each stage of the process – could you give your paper based design to a developer to implement it – what information is missing, how could you provide that information?
NB: The important thing is that you demonstrate a rigorous approach to problem solving through a visual design process, your submission should not rely to heavily on one media type! Avoid producing a dense text based document when all the above methods would communicate your design process and your design solution more effectively.
